The London Evening Standard reports that Arsenal midfielder Alex Song – who has played as the defensive anchor in Arsene Wenger’s three-man central midfield this season – is ready to help fill the void left by the absence of Cesc Fabregas from the Gunners team due to injury.

He knows that the role has become doubly important with Fabregas’s steadying presence and leadership alongside him.

“I know that my position is crucial in the team, when everyone is attacking, I want to hold, so that if we lose the ball I’m the first defender in the midfield to stop any counter-attacks and passes coming through,” the 22-year-oldIt’s a vital role – I just need to close quickly and give the ball forward when I receive it. This year we have done well, everyone’s contribution when we have lost the ball has been very good.

“We’ve turned quickly to defend just as we turn quickly to attack when we win it. But we know we can still do better. We have to keep raising our level because we have given ourselves a chance of doing something good this year.”
